1944- 1945: The War Effort

The decision of the Board of Governors is a precedent which Radio-Ouest-Française decides to use to give new impetus to the subscription campaign it is planning in the West. After all, what they have given to Manitoba they will not be able to refuse to Saskatchewan, will they? Father Baudoux is in charge of the campaign in Saskatchewan. He thinks he can convince the people to make contributions even if the licence has not been granted. They aim to raise $150,000 in the West. The campaign begins in June 1944. It is making headway when the campaign in the East begins, directed by the Comité permanent de la survivance française en Amérique, with a target of $150,000. Raymond Denis Raymond Denis, former president of the ACFC, comes straight to the point. He takes to heart anything to do with the land where he started his family, and the decision by the CBC to refuse the licence has made him indignant. Benoît de Margerie, son of Antonio, gives us some idea of his character. (audio) A concerted effort by the enthusiasts for the cause of French radio in the West has unexpected results: $170,00 is collected in the West and $200,000 in the East! With this money in hand, surely they can now convince the Board of Governors to grant the licences.
