Station Operations

Radio Gravelbourg and Radio-Prairie-Nord are established in 1944. The ACFC and the Collège Mathieu Corporation respectively are the legal property owners. Saskatchewan Francophones are shareholders in the two companies. Each parish which has contributed $3,000 or more to the cause appoints a delegate who votes for a representative from his region on the board of directors of CFRG or of CFNS. The two boards of directors entrust the management of the stations to one man, Dumont Lepage. His job is to supervise construction work, buy technical equipment and choose the staff. From 1953, Mr. Lepage manages only CFRG, a position he holds until his retirement in 1969. Théodore Préfontaine from Lisieux succeeds him at CFNS. The management of the stations soon notices that Francophones are in the habit of listening to English radio. Fernand Ippersiel, who was program director in 1952, describes the problem (audio).
Throughout their existence the stations have to operate despite financial problems. Jeanne Beauregard, a longtime employee of CFRG, says that you learned to live with the worry and recalls an anecdote showing the solidarity of the radio employees in the face of these difficulties (audio).
