Introduction

For us today, the existence of French radio in Saskatchewan seems unquestioned. However, it was the result of a long struggle by Francophones in the province. Radio broadcasting reached the prairies in the middle of the 1920s. From now on, French-speaking families, the last bastion of the language in an overwhelmingly English environment, would be subject to the assault of broadcasting from English-language radio stations. Here we are going to meet the leaders who early on realized the importance of having French on the airwaves for the development of their language and culture. We'll see the political, technical and economic obstacles they had to deal with before the establishment of French radio stations in Saskatchewan. We'll also take a look at the people who worked with French radio and carried it forward until the stations were sold to the CBC in 1973.
